Riboud show hits Shanghai
The Shanghai Art Museum launched last Saturday a retrospective of the internationally-renowned French photographer Marc Riboud.
Titled “The Instinctive Moment,” the exhibition showcases 130 classic dark room prints, half of which focus on Chinese society during the early years of the Reform and Opening-up Policy.
Some rare works that have never been on public display will be part of the retrospective, according to Li Ning, curator of the exhibition at the Shanghai Art Museum.
Widely known in China for capturing Chinese life during the Mao era, Mr. Riboud was one of a few European photographers who came to take photos that covered the emergence of a new New China after the passing of Mr. Mao. Affectionately dubbed Ma-Ke-Lv-Bu, the self-described Sinophile visited China over twenty times. He returned to Shanghai at the age of 87 for the retrospective, which includes iconic photos that retrace his career in Africa, America, Asia, Europe and the Middle East.
“Beautiful picture bothers me, although I too fell into that trap. If you think too much about form, you risk falling into a beautiful, well-done trap, whereas photography is about changes, the instinctive moment, the snapshot.”
The touring exhibition will run through April 2 and will travel to the Art Museum of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing from April 23 to June 6.
