冬季奥运会后天就要在加拿大温哥华开幕了。现在就让我们一起来了解一下这个风景怡人的加西大都市吧
“When you are tired of Vancouver, you are tired of life,” a time-traveling Dr. Johnson might have said about this western Canadian city that routinely tops international surveys of the best places to live.
A coastal city located in British Columbia, Vancouver is named for British Captain George Vancouver, who explored the area in the 1790s.
The largest metropolitan area in western Canada, Vancouver ranks third-largest in the country. Once called a “city of neighborhoods,” its residents are ethnically diverse, with 52 percent speaking a first language other than English. People of English, Scottish and Irish origins were historically the largest ethnic groups in the city, and elements of British and Irish society and culture are still visible.
Vancouver is well-known as an urban center surrounded by nature, making tourism its second largest industry. It is the third-largest film production center in North America after Los Angeles and New York City, earning it the nickname “Hollywood North.”
The 2010 Winter Olympics and the 2010 Winter Paralympics will be held in Vancouver and nearby Whistler, a resort community 125 kilometers north of the city starting on February 12.
