    Keane is an English rock band that first formed in 1995 and took its current name in late-1997. The group comprises composer, bassist, and pianist Tim Rice-Oxley, lead vocalist Tom Chaplin and drummer Richard Hughes. The original line-up included guitarist Dominic Scott, who left in 2001.

    The group has been called “the band with no guitars” because of its heavily piano-based sound, which differentiates them from most rock bands. By using delay and distortion effects, they create sounds not immediately recognizable as piano. Mr. Rice-Oxley and Mr. Scott were the main writers of the band’s songs during their early years. When Mr. Scott left in 2002, Mr. Rice-Oxley became the main composer.

    Keane achieved mainstream success with the release of their debut album, Hopes and Fears, in 2004. The album won multiple awards and was the best-selling British album of that year. In 2008, their first and second albums were voted among the best British records of all time, along with entries by the Beatles, Radiohead and Oasis.
