    Ranked among the top universities in the world, the University of Melbourne is a public university located in Victoria. Founded in 1853, it is the second oldest university in Australia and the oldest in Victoria. It is a member of Australia’s “Group of Eight” lobby group, the Universitis 21 and Association of Pacific Rim networks. It is colloquially known as one of the Sandstone Universities, which refers to an informally-defined group comprising the country's oldest tertiary education institutions that have buildings primarily constructed of sandstone.

    Among Australian universities, the university claims a leading position in business, education, engineering, arts, law and medicine.  In 2008, it introduced the controversial “Melbourne Model,” a combination of various practices from American and European universities aimed at consistency with the European Union’s “Bologna Model” and international relevance and standing for its degrees.
