Calligraphy embroidery tours Moscow

An exhibition showcasing the tiger-featured embroidery and craftwork of Russian artist Irina Zakharova debuted last Friday in Moscow’s Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, giving visitors a first-hand look at art affiliated with the Chinese Year of the Tiger.

Dozens of tiger-themed pieces and other embroideries based on the Chinese characters for hope, love and longevity showcased the enthusiasm of  Ms. Zakharova for Chinese art and embroidery.

The exhibited work is primarily Chinese calligraphy recreated with delicate embroidery techniques. The cloth used for the collection came from Shandong, Shanxi and Tianjin, where Ms. Zakharova studied embroidery. “By using my own hands, I hope I can make something that is distinctively Chinese,” she said.

Irina Zakhorova first engaged deeply with Chinese culture while touring the country in the 1980s with her husband, a Russian diplomat. Much of her subsequent work has focused on Chinese art and culture. Her exhibition is a part of the Year of Chinese Language in Russia.
