Sandra Bullock golden once more

They have called her “America’s Sweetheart” for more than a decade. When she won a Golden Globe for Best Actress last weekend, Sandra Bullock finally gave notice that she was ready to graduate as one of the Queens of Hollywood.

Ms. Bullock, who is an improbably beautifully preserved 45, is said to be pretty much “a sure thing” for an Oscar nomination for her role in The Blind Side -- the gossip in Hollywood is that she will romp home with a golden statuette come the ceremony in March.

    America’s sweetheart

She dropped out of East Carolina University to pursue an acting career, although she later completed her degree. She made her first notable film appearance in Demolition Man in 1993, followed a year later by Speed and then by a string of romantic comedies including While You Were Sleeping, Two Weeks Notice and Miss Congeniality.

It had been a few years since she made a movie in funny-girl mode -- she could do that role in her sleep, so the break was a conscious choice. In 2006 and 2007, she was cast as a lovelorn doctor in a romantic time warp in The Lake House, the dowdy and brilliant author Harper Lee in Infamous, and a woman who has disturbing visions of her husband’s death in Premonition. This month, she was back in comedy mode with The Proposal, starring as a Canadian cougar boss who pops the question to her assistant (Ryan Reynolds) to avoid deportation.

Times are good for Ms. Bullock. She was the star of two mega-hit movies last year that together grossed an astonishing figure north of $500 million.

    Unconventional marriage

Five year ago, she made a most unexpected choice of husband -- Jesse James, a heavy-set motorbike enthusiast who is a highly-unlikely consort for a gleaming goddess of the silver screen.

In the most recent season of “Celebrity Apprentice,” the audience came to see some of what Ms. Bullock sees in the motorcycle mechanic. “I know the honesty of the beast, and that’s incredibly admirable in that it doesn’t curb itself, whether the camera is on or off,” she said.

“I’ve had to learn a hard lesson in that I’m not allowed to open car doors anymore. It was so hard for me to allow someone to take care of me. It is not because I can not take care of myself. But Jesse was like, ‘Just let me do this,’ ” she said of her chivalrous partner. Co-star Ryan Reynolds said that “they both have that steely determination that has made them successful. It is a match made in heaven.”

    Fashionista

Ms. Bullock still has her glam moments. She is a seasoned pro on the red carpet and she wears the sexy-but-strict corporate suits in her new film well. Her outfits consistently make her look at least a decade younger. Mixing up workouts that include running and Pilates keeps her motivated, thin, and strong, she said.

“If I had my druthers, I would be in some abstract cellophane-wrapped piece that expresses something artistic,” said Ms. Bullock, who has worn Lanvin and Alberta Ferretti on recent red carpets. “I love fashion, I love couture. I am going to erect a shelf in my bedroom with an art light to be the spot for the shoes of the month. I want them to serve another purpose.”
