Seven beauty trends for 2010

While beauty trends are fleeting -- many are played out in a matter of weeks -- here are the up-and-coming looks that are sure to be huge this year. From bright makeup to matte gloss and big braids, here’s a short list of beauty trends to keep up that “total beauty know-it-all” reputation.

    Supersized braids

Teeny-tiny hippie braids were everywhere in 2009, but big, bold and beautiful braids will turn up on celebs and other hair pros this year. To make braids seem super-fresh, squeeze and scrunch them to make them look sexy and carefree.

    Look-at-me nails

It’s time to ditch the sheer color. Nails will be bigger and brighter than ever -- nails in 2010 are all about expressing individuality. For great colors and special effects, mix and match polishes and topcoats for a creative nail design.

    Bright eye shadow

Smoky late-night party-girl eyes will always be in style, but all the cutting-edge It Girls have started showing up in living color. The key is to keep it sophisticated -- so whether it’s a shade that’s pastel or vibrant, keep the rest of the look neutral with a sheer gloss and bronzer for a dynamic makeup effect.

    Ribbons as  hair accessories

It might be time to hang up the headbands. Save the face-covering hair accessories for next Halloween and try a ribbon-accented updo. Get this look by braiding ribbon or a colored extension into your slicked-back chignon, or be daring with temporary color for hair.

    Bright and cheery lips

A pop of color makes just as much noise as the black gloss that made its debut on the fall 2009 runways and is far cheerier. For bright lips that last, makeup artist suggests using a stain under lipstick or gloss for “boldness and staying power.”

    “Bumped up” hair

The new thing this year is to wear pumped-up hair loose rather than pulled back. Just tease hair at the crown and use a texturizer for a “rough-and-tumble yet super-glamorous” look. The only accessories needed this season are a side part and a heartbreaker smile.

    Top-knot buns

Steal this look from the dance studio by slicking hair back into a high ponytail and smoothing those flyways with a lightweight gel or cream. Twist and secure with V-shaped pins for the hottest and easiest updo ever.
