CCS in China
Huaneng 华能

As one of the major utility companies in the country, Huaneng has a strong position in CCS mainly through its research arm, the Xi’an Thermal Power Research Institute (TPRI) and its own CCS projects.
Beijing Gaobeidian 北京高碑店
Gaobeidian is the first successful trial of carbon capture in China. This post-combustion capture (PCC) pilot project started in June 2008 at the Huaneng’s Gaobeidian power plant in suburban Beijing, where CO2 was removed after coal combustion. The Huaneng pilot plant is designed to capture 3000 tons of CO2 per year.
The Gaobeidian project is apparently profitable. Huaneng has estimated that it costs around 200 RMB to capture one ton of CO2, while the resale of the CO2 captured from the plant to the food and beverage industry is much higher.
Shanghai CCS 上海CCS
Encouraged by the success of its Gaobeidian project, Huaneng started a new CO2 capture project at its Shidongkou power plant in Shanghai this July. This project, with completion scheduled before the end of 2009, will capture as many as 100,000 tons of carbon dioxide annually.
Shenhua CCS 神华CCS
As a largest coal producer in China, Shenhua has announced its plan to build a CCS at its 1-million-ton direct coal-to-liquids plant in Ordos, Inner-Mongolia. This will be a first CCS project in real sense, as Shenhua is looking for suitable site for CO2 sequestration.
GreenGen 绿色煤电

GreenGen is China’s centerpiece initiative to advance near-zero emission coal-fueled generation with hydrogen production and CCS. It is a joint venture among large utility companies in China. Huaneng has controlling stake along with the Peabody Energy of the U.S. Currently, this $1 billion project, located in Tianjin, is in its first phase of construction.
