CEAC celebrates anniversary
The Chinese European Art Center at the Art College of Xiamen University is marking its first decade of operations with a pair of special exhibits from November 20 to December 11. More than a dozen Chinese artists and 21 foreign artists from around the globe will display their works in two exhibitions entitle “The Dialogue” and “The Young Dialogue.”
Swiss artist Sandra Kunz and Chinese artist Yang Jian’s architectural entry is a collaborative work coupling cultural elements of China and Switzerland. Their red inflatable plastic house The Container blends southeastern Chinese and European architecture. Cultural flourishes include the lattice-styled roofing of a traditional Chinese temple and rounded exteriors suggestive of European influence. Ms. Kunz pointed out that the color red in China symbolizes good luck but is also emblematic of Switzerland’s national flag.

The “Young Dialogue” exhibition displays the work of postgraduate art students and is the fourth gallery collaboration between Xiamen’s Art College and the Sandberg Institute in Amsterdam. Seventeen young artists from these institutes met a week before the exhibition opened to plan the gallery’s layout and to share feedback on their artwork. “When students step outside and see different opinions, they begin to know where they stand as artists,” said curator Marjo van Baar.
CEAC director Ineke Gudmundsoon curated The Dialogue. She said that the tenth anniversary of the institute was a celebration of “the continuous progress of a long-term relationship between China and Europe.” Dutch artist Pieter Holsten spoke approvingly of CEAC’s work in bridging communities and added that “Xiamen is a place where artists can meet in China and do their work.”

The Red Snowball is a compilation of the past ten years of activities of CEAC and the Xiamen University Art College that will be published this year in China and the Netherlands.
