    The eleventh China Theater Festival opened in the Hall of the People in Xiamen last Saturday. The festival is co-hosted by the China Association of Arts and Culture, the Association of Dramatists and the city of Xiamen. Events run through December 13.

    Established in 1988, the China Theater Festival is a large-scale biannual venue for operas from a wide range of genres. This year 28 operas were selected for presentation by the China Drama Association from 127 entries. A total of 21 genres such as Peking and Shaoxing Opera are included in the program. The festival also features historical dramas and plays that explore contemporary Chinese society. 

    The participating theatrical companies come from 17 mainland China regions. Taiwan entries are included this year in the festival for the first time.
