在节前做新中国六十周年华诞特刊的时候，毛主席诗词里的这句已引起我的注意。没想到接下来的两周，这个标题在脑海里挥之不去，在心中翻腾起伏。

　　国庆到上海观礼，看到世博会准备前沿的城市，沸腾得几乎挖地三尺，从出租司机到银行家，从市民到游客，无不对此热衷咏叹，可遥想明年的盛况；接下去的几天又飞到了我从未去过的青城，眺望了美丽的大草原，感叹到原来印象中落后的内地，竟会如此现代大气，更有着无可比拟的自然开采资源，前景无限风光。从东到西，从南到北，处处是建设的万千新气象，我不禁为神州的美好明天赞叹不已。

　　回到我们这所海西名城，见到特地从美国回乡探亲的师弟夫妇。几年前师弟还在给我当实习生，今天再看到我们的《双语周刊》，眼睛一亮大赞变大样了，他的太太更是力荐可以给自己工作的美中交流协会的汉语老师当教材。当他们千里迢迢拿着周刊回到纽约的时候，我想，海西建设的一点一滴，会透过薄薄纸张渗透到远离家乡的游子心中，成为他们量度祖国变化的温度计。

　　紧接着听到鼓舞人心的消息是在国庆日后，北京召开了世界媒体峰会，胡主席在会上做重要讲话，寄语媒体为增进各国人民对中国的了解做出新贡献，这让一直搭建沟通中西方桥梁的我们备受激励。全球化时代的到来，东方的和平崛起，更是“太平世界，环球同此凉热”。

　　复旦大学历史系教授顾晓鸣做IBM形象代言人时说过，“其实，我们的世界很早就联系在一起。人类越是往前发展，越是体现着血肉联系，人类一家亲。”

　　IBM后来与联想的并购，也成就一段商界合作的佳话，是否是源于中西文明的融合呢。我无从解释，还是想到了这句诗词，不管硬件贴的标签，奔腾的芯片都是相同的。

One world, cold or warm

    The title of this essay is taken from “Kunlun, to the tune of Nien Nu Chiao,” a poem written by Mao Zedong. The line first caught my eye when I was working on the special issue for the sixtieth anniversary of the People’s Republic of China. This line flashed now and then in my mind during the past two weeks.

    I was in Shanghai for the National Day holiday. The host city of the forthcoming World Expo was a hive of activity. Over the next few days, I visited Hohhot for the first time. I never imagined that a supposedly sleepy landlocked town could in fact be so vigorous and blessed with unrivalled natural resources. From the east to the west and from the south to the north, I marveled at the brilliant prospects of our country.

    I then returned to Xiamen and received a visit from a former underclass student and his wife, both of whom had just flown in from the United States. My friend was leafing through the pages of Common Talk Weekly with eyes wide in amazement. His wife even suggested recommending the paper to Chinese-language teachers at the U.S.-China Exchange Council for use as course material.

    Another encouraging piece of news broke after the National Day holiday. The World Media Summit was firstly held in Beijing. President Hu Jintao addressed the summit and called upon the media to help people around the world gain a better understanding of China. In the era of globalization, the peaceful development of China reflects that ours is truly “one world, warm or cold.”

    I am reminded of a comment that Gu Xiaoming, a history professor at Fudan University, once made: “Actually, our world has been connected since time immemorial. The more the world develops, the closer people are connected. All people in the world belong to the same family.”

    Lenovos’ landmark acquisition of IBM’s PC unit can be seen as a sign of the increasing integration of the East and the West. It reminds me of Mao Zedong’s line, but with a modern twist: Regardless the brand name on the outside, the chips inside are the same.
