学语法--“Include” 和 “etc.” 不能一起用

        “etc.” 这个英语缩写不光不好看，而且在很多场合都不适用，除了在表格等空间不足的场合，建议大家尽量不使用。

       那么，什么时候 “etc.” 不适用呢？

       举个例子： Common Talk Weekly’s readership includes students, teachers, translators, etc. 

       《双语周刊》的读者包括学生、老师、翻译人员等等。

       错误在哪里呢？大家注意到了吗？在这句子里，“include” 和 “etc.” 实际上是同一个意思，这两个说法都表示“除了句子中已列举的条目以外，还有其他的内容”的意思。因此，一句话中同时用这两个词显得有点重复，所以，删除 “etc.”

例句： Common Talk Weekly’s readership includes students, teachers and translators.

       看完这句话之后，我会觉得除了句子中列举的人群外，还有其他的类别，比如：“office worker”

       英国《时报》、广受推崇的《Strunk and White》都反对用 “include,” “including,” “such as”等词来引入一个把全部内容都写出来的列表。但考虑到他们的存在，为了弄清楚include, including, such as 这些词的用法，我想出了一个解决方案：

       列表不完整用include, 而列表完整用comprise或者consist.

       下面两个例子都是完整的列表（即两个句子都暗指《双语周刊》不会帮助到列表以外的对象， 比如“office workers”):

例句： Common Talk Weekly’s readership is comprised of students, teachers and translators.

例句： Common Talk Weekly’s readership consists of students, teachers and translators.
