The fifth Gulangyu Piano Festival concludes today after well-known domestic and foreign pianists as well as promising young Chinese pianists put on a series of performances that began on July 26.

The Gulangyu Piano Festival consisted of the National Juvenile Piano Contest and a concert series featuring Chinese and overseas pianists.

During the festival, winners from previous National Juvenile Piano Contests, including Yuan Jie, Hao Duanduan, Zhou Yunqing and Chen Xiaoyu, gave performances at the Gulangyu Music Hall. This year’s event featured 42 contestants from the top nine music schools in China, 19 teenagers and 23 youngsters.

In the final round of the youngster’s group, six contestants were required to choose a pair of musical works from previous festivals or from a selection of ten classical piano concertos. The Xiamen Philharmonic Orchestra accompanied the contestants during the final round.

The second National Amateur Teenagers Piano Performance Contest featured non-professional teenage pianists. This year’s contest included 229 amateurs in five age groups from 28 regions in China. Competition winners received Blüthner pianos.

Four concerts were held in the Gulangyu Music Hall during the festival. Featured performers included American pianist Joseph Banowetz, Israeli tenor Davide Dionigi, the piano duo of Hong Kong twin sisters Zhou Yueping and Zhou Yueting, and piano soloist Alexandre Paley.

Other festival activities included the planting of commemorative trees from various countries in the Musician Memorial Forest at the Gulangyu Musical Instrument Museum. The musicians also left their imprints on the museum’s handprint wall.

The organizing committee placed 11 pianos at the festival hotels and public places including the Gulangyu ferry pier, the Sanyou Holiday Department Store, the Lizhidao Hotel and the lobby of the People’s Bank Hotel. Contestants gave live performances at the various sites.
