Life-changing yoga

Richard Baimbridge was a serious surfer when he was 15 -- stretching in the sand, waiting silently for the first rays of sunlight, appreciating the beauty of the light dancing on the water. Only later did he realize he was doing yoga.

Ten years on, he traveled across India, still unaware of what yoga was -- at least, not what is commonly called yoga today.

Richard first met yoga directly when he neared the age of 30. He had severe stomach problems that did not respond to ordinary treatment. He took up yoga in a search for relief and his health improved dramatically after becoming a regular practitioner.

In Shanghai, he studied for two years with the renowned yogi Duncan Wong, who is a teacher of celebrities such as Sting and Madonna and who mixes martial arts and hip hop music with yoga.

Richard is currently the head teacher at Moksa Yoga in Xiamen and is devoted to sharing how yoga changed his life.

    Yoga varieties

The word yoga literally means “union” in Sanskrit, the ancient language of India. There are many types of yoga, most of which have nothing to do with standing on your head or twisting the body into pretzel shapes.

That particular type of yoga is called “Hatha Yoga,” which includes all types of physical yoga, such as Ashtanga, Vinyasa and Hot Yoga. This variety of yoga stresses harnessing the hidden powers of the body such as prana, which is roughly equivalent to the Chinese concept of qi.

    Acro yoga

Acro yoga is an exotic new style that blends partner yoga with Thai massage and acrobatics. AcroYoga has the ability to bring people together -- people who have been married for years fall in love all over again in class as they rediscover their sense of mutual trust and beauty.

    Moksa yoga

Moksa means “liberation from rebirth” in  Sanskrit. Moksa Yoga is Xiamen’s newest yoga studio, which has as its motto, “Let Yoga Change Your Life.” The inspiration for the slogan comes from the life of Mr. Baimbridge, the studio’s head teacher. Yoga has taken him on a journey around the world to places like Bali, Mexico and Thailand.

    Yoga ideal

Richard has been sustained in his journey by the joy received from seeing the power of yoga to heal people and to make them happy. He feels that his greatest reward is the smile of a student at the end of a class, the bright spark in that student’s eye. Moments like that convince him time and again that the mind and the body are far more powerful than commonly believed.
