Fuzhou No. 1 Hospital invited Fuzhou Medical Authorities and the Fuzhou Procuratorate to hold a special lecture on August 11 on refusing commercial bribes. 50 medical experts signed a pledge urging medical staff to reject medical crimes. The pledge included refusing to accept "red envelope" gifts and refusing bribes.

According to the Provincial Office Against Flooding and Drought, Typhoon Saomai, the strongest to hit China in four decades, lashed Fujian for 12 hours after making landfall in Zhejiang on August 10. The typhoon brought gusts of 216km/h and torrential rain to Fujian, and triggered flooding across the province. Early surveys suggest that economic losses in the 14 counties in Fujian hit by the typhoon totaled RMB 6.357 billion.

Xiamen has recently put in place new policies to promote the development of its animation industry. Any animation broadcast on CCTV will receive an award of RMB 1,000 for each minute of broadcast time(maximum prize RMB 2 million). Xiamen has set ambitious targets for its animation industry to hit by 2010. The city wants to have 100 animation and game design companies, 10,000 animation professionals working in the city, and RMB 10 billion in animation and game design revenues.

On August 4-5, Xiamen Gulong Cannery sold RMB 100,000 worth of products in the Indonesian capital Jakarta and donated all of the proceeds from the sales to earthquake-stricken areas in Indonesia. It was the first time a Xiamen company had organized this kind of charitable activity overseas. The Gulong brand is immensely popular in Southeast Asia.

On August 8, a ceremony was held to mark the launch of The Channel, the mainland's first Taiwan-oriented professional journal targeting readers across the Taiwan Straits. The journal is published by Xiamen Daily.

First disaster response center opened
厦门组建首个灾害应急救援中心

On August 8, a disaster response center was opened by the fire brigade in Xiamen. The center will serve as the permanent command center for rescue and assistance operations. On the same day, six civilian disaster response squads were formed to provide rapid response to large fires, earthquakes, chemical accidents, typhoons and traffic accidents.

"Falcon" squad cuts street crime

Quanzhou police's armed plainclothes "Falcon" squad has been credited with a remarkable decrease in street crime this summer in Quanzhou. Since its formation just a few weeks ago, the "Falcon" squad has brought in more than 200 suspects for mugging or purse snatching. Members of this special police squad average less than 30 years old, and they are all marksmen with particular talents which qualified them for duty.

CCTV has published a list of China's 10 most beautiful townships and villages, as nominated by 100 local media organizations in China and voted for by the public. The top 10 are Wuyuan in Jiangxi; Laitan township in Hechuan, Chongqing; Peitian in Liancheng, Fujian; Wu township in Zhejiang; the Royal Prime Minister's Palace in Shanxi; Zhuxian township in Henan; Heshun township in Yunnan; Hong village in Anhui; Guangfu township in Jiangsu; and Zhouzhuang in Jiangsu.

At 11am on August 10, China Maritime Cruise Ship 8010, Fuzhou maritime authorities' first maritime law enforcement vessel, set out from the wharf under the Min River Bridge for its first mission on the river. Equipped with sophisticated radar and satellite navigation systems, the ship will improve the efficiency and effectiveness of law enforcement on the seas around Fuzhou.

Three Fujian enterprises earn top rankings

The Chinese edition of the world's leading business magazine Forbes recently published its first-ever list of China's biggest companies. The list was based on the magazine's first survey of China's large private corporations. Three Fujian-based enterprises - Zijin Mining, Heng'an International and Malata -appear in the top 100.

Quanzhou has become China's largest producer of paper sanitary products. These include sanitary napkins, paper diapers and tissues. Quanzhou now accounts for more than half of China's total production and one third of the domestic market. Statistics show that Quanzhou is home to 286 of China's 1,000 licensed tissue manufacturers.

The Fujian Provincial Development and Reform Commission has unveiled a list of 185 key projects for investment. These projects, requiring a total investment of about RMB 117.8 billion, include infrastructure, agriculture, industry and service projects. Some of the most eye-catching items include the Nanhui section of the Quanzhou-Sanming Expressway and the Wuyishan-Ningde Expressway.

70, 000 admitted to universities
全省共有七万人考上本科

On August 11, the results of this year's university undergraduate admissions were published. 70,048 high school graduates in Fujian Province have been admitted to university (not including advanced admissions). 14,724 were admitted to the top group of universities, and 40,222 to second tier institutions. There was a considerable bias towards science programs, particularly among the top achievers. University entrance is expected to be down 14% on last year.

Donation helps 150 needy freshmen
闽百余贫困学子圆了大学梦

At a ceremony on August 9, nearly 10,000 employees from TCL Group donated a total of RMB 660,000 to the China Youth Development Foundation. The money will go to university-bound students as part of the Project Hope. The donated money will support 150 needy university freshmen from areas hardest hit by the recent typhoons, including Zhao'an, Jianou and Shunchang.
