Italy are the FIFA 2006 World Champions, beating France 5-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in Berlin's Olympiastadion on July 9. It is the fourth time Italy have won the championships, after victories in 1934, 1938 and 1982. Marco Materazzi, who headed Italy's one goal home, gave the World Cup trophy an Italian topping in celebration after the game. Germany's Miroslav Klose won the Golden Shoe award as the top scorer of the finals with five goals in seven matches. Lukas Podolski, also from Germany, went away with the Best Young Player award. France captain Zidane won the Golden Ball award. |
