Tibetans dressed in festive costumes witnessed a historic moment at the Ando railway station in Tibet on July 1 as the first two passenger trains on the "roof of the world" ran between Tibet and Qinghai. The Qinghai-Tibet railway, a marvel of railway engineering, stretches 1,956 km from Xining, capital of Qinghai, to Lhasa. It is the highest railway in the world. With the opening of the Qinghai-Tibet railway, transport links with Tibet are finally put on the same footing as the rest of the country. |
