Leehom complains about media

CNN (Talk Asia) recently aired an interview with Taiwanese pop star Wang Li Hong (Leehom). Leehom talked about how the media does not respect people's privacy. He said that some newspapers even went online to look at his blog and used what he said as headlines for gossip columns. Inventor of a new music genre, "chinked-out", which incorporates ancient Chinese music into modern hip-hop, Leehom hopes that Asia's pop culture can absorb more from its past.

Kidman's wedding a 'spiritual journey'

Nicole Kidman's marriage to country singer Keith Urban this month will mark a new stage on her spiritual journey. Since her split from Tom Cruise in 2001, Kidman has returned to her Catholic roots, attending mass regularly. She abandoned her faith when she married Cruise in 1990. Kidman has since been granted an annulment on the basis that her first marriage did not conform to the requirements of the church.

Environmental protection in XIS

厦门国际学校非常重视在学生的日常培养中注入环境保护意识: 减少校园内一次性纸杯和面巾纸的使用量, 回收包装瓶和包装罐, 举办"走遍福建"的环保筹款活动等等. 最近, 五年级的同学们又举办了一个大型的展览会, 用回收袋, 纸张, 塑料等废旧物资来妆点信息展示板, 并自编自演了环保音乐剧.



The 5th graders of XIS, under the guidance of their teachers, have always been very passionate about protecting the earth and educating others to recycle their waste. Seeing that bottles and cans were being tossed out along with the garbage, they started a bottle and can recycling program at school. Through speeches and entertaining skits, they got their message out to other students. Noticing that unwanted rubbish was piling up and being burned, the students wrote a letter to the local Xinglin authorities. The district government reacted quickly and removed all the trash.The 5th graders held a handkerchief and re-useable water bottle sale to help other students reduce the amount of material they wasted. The sale was a big hit and turned out to be very effective.

The students also suggested a "Walk-Across-Fujian" fundraiser, collecting money based on how far they walked. All of the money raised from the walk went to the China Environmental Protection Foundation. The 5th graders of XIS wrapped up the school year with a large exhibition. Using recycled bags, paper, plastic, and various other items salvaged from the trash, the kids put together informational display boards. All of the grades were invited to take a tour and learn about environmental topics ranging, from the history of garbage to how we can reduce, reuse and recycle. With the help of their music teacher, Karen Wenzel, the 5th graders composed a catchy song in their musical about saving the environment. The performance was entertaining and really caught the imagination of the whole school.
