Sticking at it

Everyone has their own way of learning English, but one secret all successful methods include is: sticking at it. Even though everybody should find the way that suits them, any method must include this basic point.

Firstly, practice makes perfect. Speaking more is a shortcut to success. We learned Chinese by speaking, without any grammar. I think English is the same. Speaking without worrying about grammar is one of the things I love. I often enjoy chatting with my foreign friends without thinking about grammar. It has improved my spoken English.

Secondly, reading as much as possible is the key to mastering reading skills. If you are not satisfied with your reading skills, you can read easy English-Chinese books. When you read these books, you will remember many words that you have learned. Remembering words by reading them is much easier than just learning lists of vocabulary. You can also learn some translation tricks while you're reading these books.

Cool English
时尚英语

By Suky

自从厦大实行三学期制之后, 第二学期就显得特别短. 前一段时间Suky的学生都在考试. 这次的英语都是和考试有关. 有些老美的惯用法虽然很简单, 可是如果你从来没听过的话, 还是会出糗的喔!

1. You will receive partial credit even you don't finish it.
如果你没作完, 你还是可以得到部分的分数.

所谓的 partial credit 就是部分给分, 例如一题十分的题目, 你作了一半, 老师给你五分, 这就是所谓的 partial credit. 跟 partial credit 相对的则是 full credit.

2. The student who asked this gets an extra brownie point.
我给提出这个问题的同学一点印象分数.

这里的印象分数, 可不是指会加分, 而是意味着我会把你的表现记在心里, 以后要写推荐信时(比如交换学生或者出国留学)说不定就派上用场了. brownie point 原义为"作讨老师喜欢的事", 现引申为印象分数之意.

3. Problem 4 killed me.
我就是败在第四题.

例如你最讨厌数学, 每次学期总成绩都被数学给拉下来, 那么你就可以说: The maths killed me.

4. What did you get?
你考多少分啊?

虽说直接问人家考多少分实在是不太礼貌, 但有时候受了好奇心的驱使, 还是不免要问一下. 其实比较含蓄一点的问法应该是, "Did you do well in the test?" (你考得如何啊?)
