Xiamen flooded by 20cm of rain

Rain and wind buffeted children on their way home from school on Wednesday last week. Typhoon Chanchu ("Pearl" in Chinese) arrived in Xiamen in the early hours of Thursday morning. It was the first major typhoon of 2006, causing the temporary relocation of over 1,000,000 people in Guangdong and Fujian. The typhoon hit the coast at Shantou, near the Guangdong-Fujian border, and by the time it reached Xiamen it had weakened to a tropical storm. .
