Avoid using toothpicks

During meals, it is easy for particles of meat or fibrous vegetables to get caught in the gaps between your teeth, causing discomfort and even swelling and pain. When this happens, it is necessary and right to remove these particles using a toothpick. Fragments of food caught between teeth can easily rot and decompose, and if bacteria take root there it can lead to gum disease.

However, the enamel at the base of your teeth is very thin, and frequently picking your teeth can cause damage. If your teeth lose this protective coating, they will become very sensitive to heat, cold, acidity and sweetness, and these things will cause pain. Dental floss can effectively clean the surface of your teeth, and can remove particles of food wedged between them. Flossing should be carried out once a day, especially after your evening meal. When flossing, form a 3-5 inch length of floss into a loop, or wrap the two ends around your middle fingers and use your thumbs to press the floss into the gaps between your teeth. Gently rub the floss against one side of your tooth, then the other side. Repeat four or five times, or until the tooth is clean and any particles lodged around it have been removed.

剔牙最好不用牙签
Translated by Phil

Dogs trained to sniff out cancer
训狗查癌

With only a few weeks of basic "puppy training", ordinary household dogs are able to detect both early and late-stage lung and breast cancers by merely sniffing the breath samples of patients. Lung and breast cancer patients are known to exhale well defined patterns of biochemical markers in their breath. Dogs are expected to become an important tool in early screening and detection, which can greatly improve a patient's survival chances.

Abrupt awakening can be dangerous
自然醒较安全

When a person is awakened suddenly, by a fire alarm for example, they go through a groggy period, known as sleep inertia. In that period, no amount of motivation is sufficient to overcome the residual effects of sleep. Short-term memory, counting skills and cognitive abilities are significantly impaired. In fact, people newly awakened perform as badly as or even worse than if they were drunk. It takes some time before we're able to make decisions efficiently and think clearly.
