Sustainable Development, People-based Practices, and Harmony between Man and Nature
Xiamen seawaters are transitional seawaters between the East China Sea and the South China Sea. As a typical subtropical marine environment, Xiamen's seawaters are characterized by rich biodiversity and intertconnected ecological systems and structures. They are home to various kinds of habitats, including estuaries, inner bays, islands and mangroves. In recent years, the municipal government has injected greater funds into environmental protection, and, under the guideline of "developing a cyclic economy and ecological economy and embarking on a fresh path of industrialization", has incorporated environmental protection into the unified planning of zoning adjustment of industrial layout and economic structure optimization. This has ensured balanced socio-economic and environmental development. In the past few years, Xiamen has been awarded a number of prestigious titles, including "National Hygienic City", "National Model City of Environmental Protection", "National Garden City" and "China's Outstanding Tourist City" as well as the Special National Award for City's Integrated Environmental Rectification". Xiamen has also been designated by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the International Maritime Organization (IMO) as a demonstration site for marine pollution prevention and management in the east Asian seas.

In the near future, we will fully implement five major environmental protection projects centering on "blue sea, green water, greenness, tranquility and cleanness" and apply scientific techniques to create an ecological bay city, foster the ecological culture and ecological economy, and promote sustainable, scientific and healthy production methods.
In addition, we will make strong efforts to develop an economy that can recycle energy resources, benefiting industry, agriculture and the people.
