It seems rather difficult to evade the ubiquitous hot wave and keep a delicate complexion while doing exercises during sultry summer weather. Many people choose to go swimming at the beach or in outdoor swimming pools. But only a few have realized that too much exposure to the sun may result in some latent health threats. The sun radiates light to the earth, and part of that light consists of invisible ultraviolet (UV) rays, the number one "beauty killer". When these rays reach the skin, they cause skin damage, such as freckles and blots, immune system suppression, and even skin cancer.

Sun Dan, a young, yet experienced swimmer and coach at Yatelanda, impressed us with her slender robust figure and fine smooth skin. Once the provincial female swimming champion in Liaoning Province, Sun Dan revealed her "secrets" for maintaining a perfect shape as well as a strong physique. "I’ve benefited a lot from swimming. As a professional swimmer, I had freckles and wrinkles from intensive summer training in the open air. After I found a really good indoor swimming pool, the once demanding fight against freckles has become easy. Now, I swim at least 1000m everyday and gradually the freckles have disappeared."

According to Sun Dan, swimming is a lifetime sport that can benefit everybody. Regular swimming builds endurance, muscle strength and cardio-vascular fitness. Swimming with increasing effort to gradually increase your heart rate and stimulate your muscle activity is easily accomplished in the water. Kicking workouts, water aerobics, pool running, or a regular swimming workout can all give you a great exercise session without fighting the weight of your body with each move. Swimming is also a relaxing activity. After a land workout, swimming
a few laps can help you cool down, move blood through your muscles to help them recover, and help you reduce stress.



Many girls swim to lose weight. "Never try to lose weight by dieting alone or by taking weight-reducing pills. Even if you lack time, try to swim at least twice a week and gradually you will gain a satisfactory figure this summer." Sun Dan said, based upon her observation of others’ unsuccessful dieting trials.Applying some basic cream with SPF15 or more before swimming is another tip Sun Dan offered to protect your skin from possible damage.

One important thing Sun Dan stressed is to do warm-up exercises to gain energy for long-distance swimming. Activating your joints and "starting" your body will greatly increase the flexibility and lessen the possibility of injuries.

When people over 60 walked on smooth, rounded cobblestones for a half-hour a day over four months, they significantly lowered their blood pressure and improved their balance, a study showed. The uneven surfaces of the stones stimulate "acupoints" on the soles of the feet. The theory is much like acupuncture, suggesting that distant and unrelated areas of the body are linked together at certain points and can be stimulated to improve physical and mental health.

The study is the latest to suggest that curcumin is a potent suppressor of cell viability and inducer of apoptosis in melanoma cell lines.
