Stay young at heart
By Jessie Wang
Personally, I think I'm the kind of person who is young at heart. But my young-at-heart confidence is simply nothing when compared with some westerners.
Two months ago I spent my Spring Festival vacation in Lijiang in Yunnan Province. One day when I was enjoying myself in the famous "Sakura Cafe", I met two old ladies from Canada and their friends, two old men from western Europe. Then every time I saw these elderly people with their ruffled hair and wrinkled faces they greeted one another with: "Hi, girls!", "Good evening, boys!" This was really funny and too much for me because I'm so much younger than them and I haven't been called "girl" for a long time!
After they shared their wonderful traveling experiences in Yunnan with me, especially about their tour on foot to the Tiger Leaping Gorge and Meili Snow Mountains, I couldn't help but admire them and began to think a little more about "age".
Most of us know that asking people's age is a taboo in western culture. That's true, but it is more than that.
Generally speaking, westerners value young people more and regard youth as the symbols of the new, hope, energy and creativity, while Chinese people respect elders more and consider age as bringing experience, authority and wisdom. I think that's why "how old are you" is such a personal and intrusive question in westerners' eyes.
That's still not all. Nobody likes getting old, including Chinese people. More and more we worship youth, but the different ways of staying young are totally different, a clash of culture, as I see it. Comparatively speaking, western people value individual feelings while Chinese people care more about other's views. It is well known that, many women spend too much money and time on beauty treatments, trying to look younger. If it makes them more confident and happier, that's their choice. For me, I prefer to see women staying young by learning, achieving, loving, laughing, doing sports, and traveling, just like the two lovely old "girls" did. Youthful looks are transient, only a youthful mind will keep us being at our best, doing our best, and looking our best during our whole life.
So here's my suggestion: don't ask for people's age, forget about your own age, and try your best to stay young at heart!

London School of Economics and Political Science
