Call for consortium
By Lily
Ma Songde, Vice Minister of Science and Technology
科技部副部长 马颂德
Speaking of the future anticipation of the Chinese LED industry, Mr Ma Songde, Vice Minister of Science and Technology, China, expressed his fullconfidence. "It's true that most of the key technologies are now held by some big international companies, and in Asia: Japan, Korea and Taiwan are the leading forces in optoelectronics. But the vision won't be far away when China has its own self-produced high-end chips system and a powerful related R&D consortium as long as we enhance all-around cooperation and form a cross-wise industry alliance."
With years of rich experience in the information industry, Mr Ma is rather modest, though he is actually one of the most attentive listeners and specialists who put forward most questions to the lecturers. In his eyes, this CIFSSL (China International Forum on Solid State Lighting) marks a big step forward in attracting many experts and scholars from home and abroad, sharing industry development strategies. It reflects an integrated global summit of strategic research and the current status in the optoelectronic industry at a higher level. China, though compared with the most advanced countries with a relatively long history of development and research such as America, some EU countries, Japan and Korea, has fallen behind in certain aspects, it has a huge potential market and a bright future for LED products ranging from theory to application areas. Now some Chinese enterprises and R&D institutions have created their development roadmaps and presented them to the forum. It's estimated that by the year 2020, China will be able to implement a 40-50% percentage usage of the high-end chips.
Speaking of the future for Xiamen to improve its optoelectronic industry on the existing solid base of a complete industry chain, Mr Ma suggested to strengthen a wider coordination with more scientific institutes in view of the fact that compared with Shanghai, one of the national optoelectronic bases, Xiamen lacks a cluster of scientific and technological support. To focus on the research of key technologies and apply for relevant patents and licenses form the intellectual property rights which might be amongst some of the important affairs we should strive to achieve in the following years. With Shenzhen freshly approved as the fifth national optoelectronic base, which is characterized by its intensive market, Xiamen can jointly make new progress together with other national bases by exchanging complementary advantages. Eventually China will foster a more creative optoelectronic force, which can greatly contribute to the global industry development and "lighten" the whole world with the energy-saving LED.
Exhibition on SSL Opens
By Shen Yang
The 2005 China (Xiamen) International Exhibition on Solid-State Lighting opened at 9 AM on April 12 at the Xiamen International Conference & Exhibition Center.
The opening ceremony was hosted by Zhang Changping, mayor of Xiamen City. Wang Qi'an, director of the National Solid-State Lighting Program Coordination Leading Group, delivered a speech at the opening ceremony. Hundreds of ministerial, provincial and municipal officials and distinguished guests from home and abroad attended the opening ceremony.
This exhibition was jointly organized by the National SSL Program Coordination Leadership Office, the China Illuminating Engineering Society and the China Association of Lighting Industry. More than 300 booths and hundreds of representatives from the SSL industry both from home and abroad were presented at the exhibition. The products presented at the exhibition covered all fields of illumination. Decorated by thousands of lights, the SSL booths were the brightest section in the whole exhibition hall and attracted most of the spectators.
During the exhibition, the China (Xiamen) International Semiconductor Lighting Forum will be held. It's the second forum since the first one was successfully convened in Shanghai last year. "Cross-Strait Roundtable Conference for Optical Communication Operating and Manufacturing Industries", which is aimed at exchanging views on topics of mutual interest, will also be held during this period.
Xiamen is one of the four national semiconductor lighting engineering industrial bases. The other three are Shanghai, Dalian and Nanchang. In 2004, the value of semiconductor lighting output occupied 45% of the gross industrial output value in Xiamen. "There is a sound base of illuminating industries in Xiamen ", Wang Qi'an said, "benefited by its special geographic position and this Exhibition, the solid-state lighting industry will definitely grow more rapidly in the future."
The organizers hope that this exhibition would promote the exchange and cooperation of SSL enterprises between the two sides of the Taiwan Straits and also promote the exchange and cooperation of the SSL industry between home and abroad.
The exhibition will last for four days, until April 15.
Roundtable Conference for Optical Communication
By Shen Yang
Cross-Strait Roundtable Conference for Optical Communication was held at Xiamen International Conference & Exhibition Center on April 12, 2005. Representatives of optical communication operators and manufacturers from both sides of the Taiwan Strait and optical communication enterprises of Xiamen attended the conference. Participants discussed the deeper cross-strait cooperation in optical communication and the specific matters related to the establishment of optical communication industry alliance between both sides. Dr Yue Chaoyu, CEO of Shenzhen Lightcomm Technology Co Ltd, Du Liangzhen, senior consultant of Photon Technology, Chen Yixin, chief engineer of Bookham Technology Co Ltd, MT Chu, secretary-general of TOCIA , Simon Gau, general manager of Liverage Technologies made speeches respectively.
Markets and talents are two of the major topics that the experts and participants paid great attention to. " China mainland provides a huge market for the optical communication industry and universities and researching institutes provide abundant specialists for this field," Yue Chaoyu said, "but mainland enterprises know little about the international markets and their products have difficulties in entering the international markets. Taiwanese enterprises have rich experience in dealing with international markets. Cooperation between the two sides will benefit both." Experts said price wars will damage the benefits of both sides and it will harm development of the whole industry. They hope to establish an association to regulate price policy between both sides. Participants agreed that optical communication is a promising high-tech industry in the 21st century and there is great room for the development of the optical communication industry.
