Marriage of utility and style
Collected by Aggie

Even if you don't recognize the Burberry name, you can find the Burberry image
in Hollywood movies. Remember the uniform Humphrey Bogart wears in Casablanca
and the raincoat Audrey Hepburn wore in Breakfast at Tiffany's? They are the
earliest and the most successful examples of Burberry. Also, Meryl Streep
and Michael Douglas wore the Burberry apparels in Kramer vs. Kramer and in
Wall Street respectively.

Being the original British luxury brand, Burberry was founded by Thomas Burberry
in 1856. In the early days, attention was focused more on function rather
than style. Burberry considered the problem of waterproofing from the agricultural
point of view because most of his customers were farmers. They normally wore
closely woven smocks of tightly packed and gathered material with a double
yoke that kept the wearer surprisingly dry. Burberry realised that keeping
out the rain depended on a close weave and voluminous fashioning. In 1879
he invented a durable, breathable and waterproof fabric and patented this
cloth calling it gabardine in 1888. Burberry's signature plaid-the red, camel,
black and white check was primarily used as a lining in the trench coat in
1924 until a presentation in 1967 saw the trademark design applied to umbrellas,
luggage and scarves. Now the classic check has become synonymous with Burberry.

Another Burberry classic is the officer's Tielocken Coat, which was the forerunner
to today's trench coat. In 1901, Burberry was commissioned by the War Office
to design a new service uniform for British officers. It is estimated that
during WWI over 500,000 British officers wore the Burberry uniform, which
was multifunctional. Even today when you look for the term "trench coat"
in some English dictionaries you would find its synonym-Burberry. In addition,
the Burberry Equestrian Knight logo was developed and registered as a trademark
of the period. In 1911 a front-page event made the Burberry brand known to
the world. The Norwegian explorer Captain Roald Amundsen, who was outfitted
by Burberry, successfully became the first man to reach the South Pole on
December 14, 1911. Before his departure he left a Burberry gabardine tent
to inform his British counterpart Captain Scott of his successful mission.
Later Irish man Ernest Shackleton was determined to be the first explorer
to cross the Antarctic continent from coast to coast. He too was outfitted
by Burberry for his 1914 expedition.
Burberry was awarded the Royal Warrant respectively from Her Majesty The Queen
in 1955 and from His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales in 1989. In 1997,
a new management team under the lead of CEO Rosemary Bravo began to revitalize
the brand with new design collections, new product ranges and a new distinctive
advertising campaign. The ads featuring British fashion icons like Kate Moss
and Stella Tennant embody the essence of the new Burberry, depicting a modern
edginess merged with classic British elitism. Burberry was again honored in
2000 and 2001 by the British Fashion Council in both the Classic and Contemporary
design categories.
