Thailand Water Lantern Festival, which is celebrated on December 15 of the Thai calendar, falls on November 26 this year. The Thai students from the Overseas College of Xiamen University observed the occasion, joined by the Thai students from Chinese Language and Culture College of Huaqiao University. Altogether over 200 people witnessed the beautiful ceremony.
In general practice, on the Water Lantern Festival, people make water lanterns in the morning and when evening comes, they light up the inside candles and let the lanterns float on the water. It is a gesture of worshiping the Goddess of Water for her supplying of water to the world.
In the northern part of Thailand, people celebrate by releasing lamps to heaven. After the candle is lit, the lamp will ascend with the uprising airflow.
Here are the Thai students dressed in traditional Thai costumes setting water lanterns afloat on the Furong Lake, Xiamen University.
