The Crowne Plaza Harbourview Xiamen saw its 9th Oktoberfest Party on October 22 and 23. The thrilling performance by a famous 6-member band from Munich, Germany carried the hundreds of guests away. With the accompaniment of warm and riot Bavarian music, classic German cuisine and beer, they reveled into the late night.

Local residents put 50 bln. yuan in banks

In the first three quarters of this year, local residents deposited a total of 50.025 billion yuan in banks, up 12.7% from a year earlier, and employees in the city made an average monthly income of 1,678 yuan, up 15.0%, with per capita disposal income of urban residents in Xiamen ranking 7th among the nation's 36 large and medium-sized cities.

Local people spend 3 bln. yuan on food in first three quarters

From January to September this year, people in Xiamen spent a total of 3.021 billion yuan on food; the sum, referring to the business turnover of the city's food and beverage industry during the first three quarters of this year, represented a 16.8% increase over the same period last year.

McDonald's opens franchise business

Ten years after its entry into the Chinese market, McDonald's is changing its operating model by opening franchise business for the first time. Qualified individuals who have met the relevant McDonald's standards will be allowed to apply for franchise; franchisees may use the McDonald's logo, share the supply system of McDonald's and obtain profits from the operations of McDonald's restaurants.

10,000 senior citizens climb mountains to celebrate Double Ninth Festival

October 22 was China's traditional Double Ninth Festival and the city's 17th Senior Citizens' Festival. To observe this double festival, as many as 10,000 senior citizens from the city climbed mountains in high spirits. Mountain-climbing activities of the city's senior citizens started back in 1990 and have now expanded to include 120 mountaineering teams.

Xiamen International School (XIS) has been implementing the philosophy and methods of the International Baccalaureate Primary Year's Program (PYP) and Middle Year's Program (MYP) for three years, and it is now proud to announce it has become officially authorized and recognized by the same international organization for upholding its international philosophy and standards. The authorization visits occurred last fall for MYP and this fall for PYP and were made by global educators. They applauded the teachers' dedication and passion.

Last Sunday night Manila Xiamen International School(岷厦国际学校) held a special party to celebrate the 59th birthday of the foundation of the United Nations. The staff hopes to express their sincere wish for a peaceful world. Manila Xiamen International School is the first of its kind in Xiamen and the students come from 15 countries and areas, most of whom are from Korea and Taiwan.

Employers with deferred wage payment to be blacklisted

Local authorities are about to kick off a special inspection of the wage payments for migrant workers in the city. Files will be created to keep track of the employers' credibility and those who refuse to mend their ways by continuing to defer wage payments to migrant workers will be put on a "blacklist".

Jimei University solicits school emblem designs
集美大学征集新校徽
Jimei University is currently soliciting designs of its school emblem from all faculty members, students, alumni living in China and beyond, and members of the general public. Ten designs submitted will be shortlisted, and the evaluation panel will decide on the best one. The chosen designer will be rewarded with 10,000 yuan, with entrants of the other nine designs each receiving a 2,000 yuan reward.

90 in 100 local students go on to university

The city's Center for Admissions & Tests recently announced the city's percentage of students who have gained entrance to university so far this year. Nearly 90 in 100 high school graduates were admitted into universities; the admission rate this year has risen 5 percentage points over last year.

Xiamen & Taiwan over the Past Century Photo Show to open at month's end
《厦台百年掠影》月底展出
A photo show featuring the interaction between Xiamen and Taiwan over the past century will open for four days starting on October 30 at the Xiamen Library; the show will relate the civilian interactions between the two places with more than 300 valuable photos taken in different periods of history. The photo show will be brought to some local residential communities.
