Burned thumb

你能相信吗?大拇指只是被烫得发红,连个水泡都没有.可是救护车来了,警察也来了!听上去是不是有点不可思议呢?但是中国女孩Lei在夏威夷时,就亲眼目睹了年龄相仿但成长环境迥异的美籍华人Ivory上演了这样一场拇指烫伤的"闹剧".

Mentioning her two-weeks' travel to Hawaii last summer, Lei, a 19-year-old girl from northern China, could still recall everything on that tropical(热带) island clearly, especially her Chinese-American roommate Ivory, who left Lei with a deepest impression through a burned thumb.

One morning, Ivory incautiously(不小心) knocked over a cup of boiled water; consequently(结果) her thumb was burned. To Lei's surprise, Ivory immediately burst into tears. "So painful? Dip the finger into water, then it'll cool off." Lei suggested. But Ivory wouldn't follow it. Then Lei took out burn ointment(软膏) brought from China. After using it, Ivory didn't stop crying. Instead she cried louder and louder so that the whole camp noticed.

Headmaster and nurses of the camp rushed to their room and checked Ivory, with sincere concern on their faces. Lei shouted, "The thumb only turned a little red, and even no blister(水泡). Nothing serious at all." But no one seemed to notice her. They all circled Ivory, busy with her thumb. Then with a sharp whistle, an ambulance came. The doctor checked the thumb and took Ivory to the hospital.

Lei stood wide-eyed, feeling extremely puzzled. She told other students, "I can't believe it! Even bleeding never drove me to the hospital, let alone a slightly burned thumb." But what happened next exceeded her understanding more. Several policemen came, asked her how Ivory got the thumb burned and recorded every detail. "Oh, my God. Is it related to something illegal?" Lei asked. "Until now we didn't find anything abnormal. But it's our routine to inspect here." The policeman replied politely.

Soon Ivory returned, with the ache having faded on its own. For a burned thumb, Chinese could solve it in three seconds by cooling it in water, while Americans would call the ambulance and policemen.

Dead heat

美国小游戏

要说好英语,要多和老美会话,多看原声片,最重要的还是要懂得如何融入美国人的生活,了解他们的日常用语.这次要谈的就是老美平常玩的一些小把戏.

1. Truth or Dare. 真心话,大冒险.
选择讲实话还是说假话. 如果选择要说实话,则任何问题你都要诚实回答.可想而知,问题通常都是很难回答的,例如, "Did you kiss that guy?" 或是 "Are you a virgin?" 之类的.如果不说实话,你就等着挨整吧.

2. Spin the bottle. 转瓶子
男女生围坐成一圈,假设先由一个男生出来转瓶子,如果最后瓶子停下来指到一个女生,那他就必须要去亲这个女生.如果是男生免了. 通常 spin the bottle 会跟 truth or dare 一起玩.当瓶子指到某人,他就必须选择 truth 还是 dare.

3. Monopoly. 金融家.
扔骰子,走格子.以前的玩法较简单,大不了停一次或后退几步;现在玩的估计跟大富翁差不多,还买股票什么的.

4. Do you have Twister at home?
你家里有没有妞妞乐啊?
Twister 是风行美国的一种游戏. 一块垫子 (mattress) 上面有各种不同颜色的方格,上面写着身体各个部位的名称.另外有一个转盘,玩游戏的人必须依转盘指针行事,如右脚放在红色格子上,右手放在黄色格子上.最后人体绝对会严重变型.许多人一起玩的话,大家就拧在一起了.
