On June 30, over 20 staff members from Kodak Xiamen paid a visit to Huangguang Primary School which is situated in the poverty-stricken area of Xiang'an District. They bestowed on the students 20 computers and large volumes of books.

July 1 witnessed the opening of the 2nd Xiamen Gifts Expo at the Xiamen International Conference & Exhibition Center. The expo, which is a professional exhibition of arts and crafts catering to overseas buyers, opened on July 2-5. The expo attracted buyers, mostly European and American, from more than 1,500 companies. The world's leading retailers, including Carrefour, B&Q, OBI, Home Depot, major arts and crafts buyers, and intermediary organizations such as Hobby Lobby, DollarTree and InterPro were present at the expo.

On the morning of June 30, the law-enforcement officers from the Fair Trading Section of Xiamen Administration for Industry & Commerce, upon the receipt of complaints about trade name infringements from two US-funded companies, Honeywell China Co., Ltd. and Johnson Controls Co., Ltd., raided Xiamen Yilin Electronic Technology Development Co., Ltd. located in an office building in Huli and confiscated 18 cartons of products with faked brand names; most of the products were counterfeited semi-finished products, spare parts and components.

July 1 marked the first day of the implementation of the Administrative Permit Law and also the first day of the online examination and approval of projects by some local government departments, allowing the preliminary review of corporate names to be completed in merely five minutes. Media reports indicate that this online examination and approval is the first one of its kind in Fujian Province.

Smallest magazine produced in Xiamen

Small Puppets Illustrated, a pictorial published by Xiamen Pictorial in 1932, was recently discovered in Zhangzhou. The pictorial, sized 9*13cm and featuring Xiamen local customs, is probably China's smallest magazine ever published.

The list of the top 10 science education bases in Xiamen has recently been unveiled; the top 10 are Xiamen Botanical Gardens, the Underwater World, Tan Kah Kee Memorial Site, the Youth Science & Technology Museum, Xiamen Earth Science Education Base, Xiamen Meteorological Science Education Base, Xiamen Fire Fighting Education Hall, Haicang Safari Park, Xiamen Bridges Museum, and Xiamen Municipal Library.

Xiamen University launches World Economic Studies Center

Xiamen University has recently launched its World Economic Studies Center, with Wang Luolin, deputy director of China Academy of Social Sciences acting as its advisor. The center will engage a number of prominent domestic and international scholars and experts to conduct in-depth research of the new trends and issues in the development of the world economy and to provide theoretical support and policy consultancy for China and Xiamen's economic development.

Xiamen University freshmen to enjoy air-conditioned comfort

Freshmen admitted to Xiamen University this autumn will be able to enjoy air-conditioned comfort in their dorm rooms as the university has installed more than 2,500 air-conditioners on its new campus in Zhangzhou. Student dormitories equipped with air-conditioners are few in Chinese universities. This air-conditioning project is another major effort of Xiamen University to improve its students' living conditions following the renovation of 10 student dormitory buildings on its Xiamen campus.
