Growth rose by 30% in first five months

Statistics indicate that the current value of the output of the city's enterprises above the designated size totalled RMB 13.076 billion in May, jumping 38.9% over the same period last year; the cumulative current value of the total industrial output in the first five months amounted to RMB 64.432 billion, up 28.2%. Xiamen continues to lead the whole province in terms of total industrial output value.

Linde Forklift Truck Co to relocate off island

Linde - Xiamen Forklift Truck Co Ltd will move to a location off the island. The Linde General Manager says that the move is in line with the best interests of not only the company but also Xiamen. The city government has reserved a land lot at the south of Guankou for Linde.

Marathon brings in RMB 49 mln. revenue

The Marathon Commendation Assembly, which was held the other day, announced that the 2nd Xiamen International Marathon, which took place here in Xiamen in March, generated revenues of RMB 49 million for local businesses.

Zhangzhou puppet crowned "world champion"

On June 6, a piece of good news arrived from the Czech capital Prague: Zhangzhou Puppet Troupe captured the Award for Best Animation at the International Puppet Arts Festival. The Prague International Puppet Arts Festival is the most prestigious arts festival organized by the International Puppet Federation, and showcases the highest level of puppet arts in the contemporary world. This puppet festival was held from May 31 till June 6.

Villagers have insurance against major diseases

More than 70,000 villagers from two townships in Haicang have recently been placed under insurance against major diseases; this insurance, which comes with a very high payout, will allow these villagers to receive reimbursements for verified hospitalization charges in excess of RMB 10,000 from Ping'an Insurance. Media reports say that all the insurance premiums for the villagers were borne by the township governments.

Outbound technicians highly sought after

From January to April, Xiamen has sent a total of 1,219 workers abroad, jumping 41.3% from the same period last year. Most such workers go to the ocean navigation and aircraft maintenance industries. Technical workers with good skills are keenly sought after.

Honest taxpayers to be exempted from examination

Xiamen Local Tax Bureau and Xiamen National Tax Bureau will jointly launch a rating system for the credit standing of the city's taxpayers. Those who are rated A with a score of 95 or higher will be entitled to reduced or exempted taxation inspections and simplified filing procedures as a reward.

Agricultural Bank has first image spokespersons

The Agricultural Bank of China, Xiamen Branch recently organized its first contest for image spokespersons and image ambassadors; two image spokespersons, one male and other female, and six image ambassadors emerged out of the contest. It's reportedly the first time that a commercial bank in the financial sector in Fujian Province has ever had its own image spokespersons and image ambassadors.

Portable bag-type refrigerator needs no power

An enterprise based in Kaiyuan Technological Park has lately developed a bag-type refrigerator, which uses special "colloid ice" as the cold source. The cold source is mounted on the inner side of the bag; take out the "colloid ice" and keep it frozen for 12 hours and then put it back into bag and the "refrigerator" will be able to maintain a low temperature (0-8℃) for at least 24 hours outdoors.

Foreign rats sneak in

Xiamen Entry & Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau warns local enterprises to raise alertness against the unauthorized entry of rats. In March, a rat was captured in the waste paper imported from Britain; in late May, personnel from the bureau caught another foreign rat in waste paper from Germany, which is the second time that such a creature has been found in waste paper from Europe.

Resident opinions sought for newly opened eateries

Oil fumes from the kitchens of eateries have long been an annoyance for residents living in the vicinity. Under the recently revised Xiamen Environmental Protection Ordinance, newly opened eateries must seek the opinions of residents in nearby areas, and eateries which have failed to minimize fume and noise annoyances to a level acceptable to the residents will be shut down.
