Maggie makes the grade

On the evening of May 18, the Chinese-Filipino students sang in Chinese at the farewell party held by the Overseas Education College, Xiamen University (厦门大学海外教育学院).

The 873-member Chinese-Filipino youth Chinese language study group concluded their 7-week studies in Xiamen and headed home on May 19 with much improved Chinese language skills. This is the 4th time that such Chinese culture education and training activities have been held.

The China International Harbor Logistics Expo & Senior Forum on Harbor Logistics Cities and the 2nd Cross-Straits Information Networking Forum took place in Xiamen on May 20, attracting a large number of senior personnel from the logistics, harbor and information sectors on both sides of the Taiwan Straits and in Japan, who explored issues relating to logistics information networking, the acceleration of harbor construction, the improvement of the logistics service system, and the promotion of city development.

Housing price dropped by 300 yuan last month

Local commercial estates averaged 4651 yuan in April, dropping 285 yuan from March; the average price of commercial residences stood at 4362 yuan, down 97 yuan from March. The drop of estate prices is mainly attributed to the State Council's decision to cool off the overheated real estate investment, which has caused some perspective home buyers to put their purchase plans on hold. With the across-the-board estate price drops, the trading volume rose slightly in April.

Old American man thankful for Xiamen doctors

On May 18, Clarence Long, a 75-year-old American man arrived back in Xiamen to mark the first anniversary of his medical treatment in Xiamen. A year ago, Mr. Long, who had been bedridden for years, sought and received an operation at the Orthopedics Department of Xiamen Zhongshan Hospital. Thanks to the superb skills of the Chinese doctors, his chronic ailment, which had annoyed him for years, was completely cured.

Xiamen to have its first five-star hotel off island

Construction of the Bay Tower, with a cost of over 300 million yuan, kicked off in Haicang on May 18. Bay Tower, the first-ever five-star hotel located off Xiamen Island, will significantly promote the development of Haicang's education and tourism sectors. The tower, with a space of 55,770 on 19 floors and 360 guestrooms, is scheduled for completion in two years.

Sculptures to be displayed on Children's Day

The 2003 "Sea · Music" Sculpture Manuscripts & Youth Sculpture Works and "Imitated Dinosaur Fossil" Sculptures will be staged at Bailuzhou before the June 1 Children's Day and will be opened for free to domestic and international tourists on a permanent basis.

Xiamen chorus established

Xiamen Chorus was officially established at the city's Activity Center for Senior Citizens on the morning of May 22. The primary objective of the newly formed chorus is to participate in the 3rd Olympic Chorus Contest scheduled for July 14-18 in Bremen, Germany.

Xiamen youth inventor captures silver medal in Paris

A bamboo hat-shaped vessel put upside down and filled with a diaper - a vessel invented three years ago by Jiang Tengzhou, a student from Xiamen No. 1 Middle School, to help plants survive the desert climate received a silver medal at the recently-concluded 95th Paris International Invention Expo. This is so far the highest award ever presented to a Chinese middle school student by an international invention expo.

Graduate students required to sign "originality statement"

Effective this year, candidates for master's degrees at Xiamen University will be required to provide a signed "Statement of Originality" at the beginning of their thesis. Prof. Chen Yongjun, head of the Graduate School of Xiamen University, said this move is aimed to promote academic integrity among students amidst increasing occurrences of plagiarism.

Xiamen University to send 15 freshmen to Singapore for studies

Xiamen University plans to select 15 students from the freshmen admitted this year for studies at two leading universities in Singapore. Singaporean authorities will provide full scholarships to the students; in exchange, the students will work in Singapore for six years upon graduation.
