The first council of presidents meeting was held in Inha University on April 29 to conclude a convention on the "Global U7 Consortium". Professor Zhu Chongshi(the second on the left), the president of Xiamen University, attended the meeting. During the meeting, President Zhu signed the "Agreement on Global U7 Consortium" and announced the "Incheon Declaration" with the other six presidents from different universities.

Responding to the challenge of higher educational globalization, Xiamen University has worked to speed up the level of cooperation with globally-recognized universities. The "Global U7 Consortium" comprises Xiamen University and six other universities, including the University of Washington, the University of Rhode Island, Inha University, the University of Haifa, Le Havre University and the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology.

On May 6, Xiamen Zhongpu Wholesales Market for Vegetables & Agricultural Side Products officially opened its fresh and live aquatic goods trading area, which is believed to be the largest and best equipped market dedicated to the trading of aquatic goods in South Fujian. This new market will not only serve local customers, but also distribute goods to Beijing and Shanghai, with exports to Japan and Southeast Asia.

Quanzhou to join World Cultural Heritage Convention

A group of 20-plus pictures depicting the historical and cultural charm of Quanzhou's "Silk Road at Sea" will be shown at the upcoming World Cultural Heritage Convention scheduled for June 28-July 7. So far, Quanzhou has completed preparations for its participation in this great event. The World Cultural Heritage Convention is an annual intergovernmental convention; this year marks the 28th World Cultural Heritage Convention of the UNESCO, which is the first one ever held in China.

Authors of paper in Science to be rewarded with RMB 100,000

The Office of Scientific Research at Xiamen University confirms its decision to give a RMB 100,000 reward to the university's C50 (Carbon 50) research team for a paper published in the US journal Science. In an effort to encourage its faculty members to publish papers in prestigious academic journals, the university will make it a policy to reward the author with RMB 100,000 if his/her paper appears in Science or Nature.

China Xiamen Flame-Tree Tourism Festival, sponsored by the city's Tourism Bureau and Xiamen Daily, closed on May 7. This festival, with its large scale, extended duration, strong local features, and ease for participation, attracted a large number of tourists and local citizens. On May 1-6, a total of 200,490 tourists joined the festivities at Tong'an Film & TV City, the Island Ring Road and Nanhu Park to celebrate the May Day.

A close contest

Xiamen VS Shanghai Billiards Contest kicked off on May 7 at Xiamen Agan Billiards Stadium. The event was co-held by the Xiamen Sports Bureau and the Shanghai Billiards Association. The two teams, each consisting of four male players and two female players, are from Shanghai and Xiamen, two cities that represent the top level of billiards in China.
