Britain's puppy of the year

Woods, an Irish Water Spaniel jumps on owner Martyn Ford after
winning the Puppy of the Year in London Jan. 8. The competition, now in
its 32nd year, featured 31 dogs who qualified through regional
competitions beating almost 10,000 puppies.The finalists were judged on
their looks but also on their personality and behaviour.

Jennifer Stewart, also known as "Living Liberty" touches up her
make-up as she braves the cold in Times Square Jan. 8 after taping an
advertisement to promote tourism for the Statue of Liberty. New Yorkers
are bracing for temperatures which are expected to get into the teens
over the weekend.

giant Honda Motor's humanoid robot Asimo pounds
steamed rice to make rice cake at the company's headquaters in Tokyo,
Jan. 11, while a Honda female employee (R) counts time. Honda employees
made "mochi" rice cakes to celebrate the New Year and give them to
customers at the showroom.

英格兰女选手计划环球航行
English yachtswoman Ellen MacArthur works on her 75 ft (23 metre)
carbon-fibre trimaran Castorama B&&Q in Sydney Jan. 8. The US
$1.8 million vessel designed by Nigel Irens has been purpose-built in
Australia for MacArthur who plans to challenge both trans-Atlantic and
round the world records. It will be tested in the fierce southern ocean
on it's maiden voyage to the Northern Hemisphere before attempting the
trans-Atlantic record.

Model train enthusiast Holger Eggeling travels on a model steam
engine at the Live Steam Indoor Festival in Sinsheim Jan. 9. The yearly
fair features train lovers and makers from around Europe. The train in
the picture is a reproduction of a Prussian T3 locomotive originally
built in 1889.

Japanese young girls pour iced water in a temporary pool to purify
their bodies and souls as part of an endurance show at Kanda Shrine in
downtown Tokyo, Jan. 10. Thirty people from 19 to 60-year-old men and
women attended the annual ceremony during the New Year's celebration.
