The Nihao gallery is currently showcasing the work of Heilongjiang-born artist Xie Feng and his photographer friend Zhang Shiji. The exhibit “Five Questions” comprises five artworks that capture Mr. Xie’s dialogue with Chinese society.
His first piece is a shoebox-sized installation entitled “Why are you so hungry,” which consists of a group of flies composed from glass-fiber-reinforced plastic. “Even if you dislike flies, they follow you around and I wonder why,” said Mr. Xie. “Are they hungry or are there other reasons?”
His second work, “What cuisine is that,” questions Chinese dietary and consumer consumption. “Chinese people eat a lot of everything, and this is meant in a wider sense,” said Ms. Xu Jing, owner of the gallery. In the work, miniature human sculptures and ceramic hands are served on plates, “a symbol of Chinese people’s lack of morals, ethics and boundaries,” Mr. Xie added.
In Mr. Xie’s third work, “What’s my fault,” he deploys a group of sculptures turned toward the gallery’s wall. In order to see the artwork, the viewer must step in front of them. “This piece addresses gossip and talking behind people’s backs. In Chinese society people love to talk about other people. By stepping in front of the sculptures, the viewers turn into the objects of gossip themselves. The piece is a request to stop talking behind other people’s backs,” Ms. Xu said.
In his fourth piece, “What’s all this training for,” Mr. Xie deploys three red human-size sculptures. Mr. Xie hopes to challenge people’s motivation in committing to a prolonged and excessive sports training program with the possible consequence of severe injury.
His final piece asks the audience “Where are we going” and comprises a group of small and metallic-looking mermaids floating toward a piece of grey cloth pinned to the gallery wall. When asked about the underlying meaning, Mr. Xie explained that “we look like a group of fish in dirty water. The entire world is changing. The systems are changing and everything is in flux. Therefore, we often feel lost and what we are looking for is the clarity of pure water.”
The exhibit “5 Questions” will be showcased from June 15th to July 6th, at the Nihao Gallery on No. 9 Gong Yuan Nan Road.

Gaojia Opera
Gaojia Opera is popular in southern Fujian, Taiwan and in Chinese settlements throughout Southeast Asia. Gaojia Opera emerged at the end of the Ming Dynasty. It was initially improvised to the accompaniment of folk music and served as a form of costume parade. When it was picked up by professional troupes, it absorbed aspects of Hui Opera (from Anhui) and Beijing Opera, developing into an opera boasting distinctive southeast Fujian features.
Gaojia Opera has a unique chou or clown role, in which a dancer performs in a style imitative of puppets, distinguishing this opera variant from other traditional operas. Gaojia opera is praised for its aesthetic value, lively plots and splendid dances. Popular both home and abroad, various Gaojia troupes have been invited to perform repeatedly in Hong Kong, Taiwan, the Philippines and Singapore.
